As if Sydneysiders didn’t have enough to celebrate already, the Sydney Festival welcomes another spectacle in one of Australia’s most beloved cities.
During the festival, 100 events and 370 performances put on by some 700 artists showcase Sydney’s love for multicultural artistic expression. While many of the performances require advanced tickets, others are free.
If you’re into extravagant art installations, you simply can’t miss taking part in the construction of Ephemeral City at the Cutaway Barangaroo Reserve. Visitors to the reserve help build this temporary city made entirely out of cardboard boxes, which will stand throughout the duration of the festival. Then, those brave enough to venture an aerial view of the structure can zipline over it via the Flying Fox.
Other unmissables include circus and cabaret performances like “La Verita,” which combines acrobatics and dance in a series of astonishing acts. Also, don’t miss Circa Australia’s performance, “What Will Have Been,” which showcases aerial acrobatics to the live tunes of a violin.
The week of January 12 to 16 is designated “family week” and jam-packed with kid-friendly shows and free events. For example, children can make their own masks at the Australian Museum or build their own cardboard robots at the Meriton Festival Village. Additionally, Arquitectura de Feria — a family-friendly fairground — will not disappoint. It offers the unique opportunity to ride a bicycle-powered carousel and hand-cranked Ferris wheel.
Whatever you decide, visiting Sydney during the festival is the best way to experience the city through celebration and at your own leisure.
